Coffee Talks: Sustainable Materials and Application Areas in the Machinery Sector

Every Wednesday, the Student Affairs Deanery of our university organizes the Coffee Talks event. On November 29, 2023, Wednesday, between 12:00 and 13:00, Bilge YILMAZ, an Instructor at Istanbul Gelişim University Istanbul Gelişim Vocational School Machine Program, examined Sustainable Materials and Application Areas in the Machinery Sector with the participation of our university's Machine and Automotive Program students. Within the scope of the event, the historical development of the concept of sustainability, the elements that make a material sustainable, the application areas of sustainable materials, and their future potentials were discussed. The discussion included the social dimension, such as local labor force, the suitability of housing needs for the region's social structure, and the environmental dimension, such as air pollution, water pollution, noise pollution, reduction in waste, as well as economic aspects like ease of maintenance, transportation costs, and energy consumption during transportation. It was emphasized that sustainability is dependent on multiple components and that meeting current needs while not jeopardizing the needs of future generations is crucial. Furthermore, they exchanged ideas about the design of sustainable materials from renewable sources such as wood, bamboo, and recyclable materials like glass, plastic, and metal. They classified widely used materials in the industry as metal, non-metal, and composite materials. They concluded that composite materials hold promise in terms of development within the scope of sustainability. While categorizing non-ferrous metals as light and heavy metals within certain limits, they classified iron-based metals as steel and cast iron based on carbon content and discussed their application areas.
